Kelp Restoration in California

Giant kelp is disappearing from the coast of California! Marine heat waves caused an imbalance where kelp does poorly, invasive kelps like Sargassum horneri flourish, and an overabundance of sea urchins have decimated kelp forests!  Marine Biologist Nancy Caruso with Get Inspired has led efforts to remove urchins in Orange County for 12 years.  With her kind tutorage, Keith Rootsaert has completed his first year of culling urchins with the Giant Giant Kelp Restoration Project in Monterey.
