The first scuba certifying agency in the United States still going strong since 1954. Originally, LA County Lifeguards went to learn from researchers at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography to create the Underwater Recreation Manual, from which all other scuba agencies derived their course content and standards. Not long after, the Underwater Instructor Certification Course (UICC) began. Nowadays curriculum and courses are taught by a collaborative effort of LA County Lifeguards and Volunteers, ensuring the courses remain rigorous and safe.
